Raw Retrospective: Monday Night Raw 05.31.93

WWF RAW Episode Nineteen
May 31, 1993
Live from the Manhattan Center
Hosts: Randy Savage, Vince McMahon, and Bobby Heenan
Approx. Run Time: 41 minutes

Hacksaw starts the show off in front of the arena, wishing a happy Memorial Day to all.

Intercontinental Championship: Marty Jannetty(c) Vs Bam Bam Bigelow
Jannetty won the title from Michaels two weeks ago and this is his first title defense. Sensational Sherri is with Jannetty while Luna Vachon is with Bigelow, who will be competing in the King of the Ring. Jannetty is coming out to the Rocker’s theme song. Some guy in the audience has the most pathetic, tiny sign in the world that says, “Marry Me Sherri.” Vince and company just laughed at him. Sherri attacks Luna before the match starts, which allows Bigelow to start off with a sneak attack. Bigelow controls thing early with a LOT of headbutts and a couple of shoulder blocks. Jannetty ducks a clothesline, pounds away on Bigelow, and hits a double axe handle off the top for two. Bigelow absorbs some punches and rakes the eyes to take control once more. Bigelow hits a back body drop but throws Jannetty so high that he is able to land on his feet in a cool spot – but he gets caught in a bear hug right afterwards. Bigelow rams Jannetty into the turnbuckle but Jannetty hits a couple of flying headscissors before suffering from an electric chair drop as we cut to break. We come back with Bigelow working a headlock. Bigelow rakes the eyes after Jannetty gets up and hits a dropkick and a splash in the corner. It just occurred to me how much I hate the low V-cut in Bigelow’s attire. I don’t need to see his cleavage. Jannetty bots Bigelow in the corner and follows up with a flying clothesline for two. Bigelow receives a flying back elbow but survives. Jannetty hits the superkick, which stumbles the big man. A clothesline and dropkick takes him down for two. Bigelow hits the bodyslam and a double underhook backbreaker. He goes for the headbutt but Sherri grabs his boot. This provides the distraction to allow Jannetty to send Bigelow into the guardrail with a baseball slide. Jannetty climbs to the top and dives on top of Bigelow! They brawl on the outside a bit but Bigelow gets counted out after getting distracted by Sherri at 9:06. *** Stupid finish aside, this was a good match that put over Bigelow as a monster and Jannetty as a man who never gives up. Bigelow splashes him after the match for good measure.
Winner and STILL Intercontinental Champion: Marty Jannetty by count out

Sherri calls out Luna to a match “in front of the whole world!” Her voice is just lovely. Luna comes out but is held back by the mullet-wearing referee. Sherri takes matters into her own hands and the two begin brawling on the outside, including a bodyslam. Bigelow comes from behind and holds Sherri while Luna attacks and strips her. Tatanka comes out to make the save in jeans…which doesn’t look right. Sherri is bleeding from the chin as Savage and Vince put over how horrible this whole thing is. Heenan thinks Sherri deserved it.

Steiner Brothers Vs Rich Myers and the Executioner
I hate the Steiner Brothers’ music. The Executioner looks like a poor man’s backyard wrestler. Think about that for a second. Rick starts off with Executioner and hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. They announce an eight-man tag match at the King of the Ring. Rick hits a clothesline/body block before forcing Myers to tag in. Things don’t end well for Myers and Scott gets tagged in. Belly-to-belly suplex leads to Rick getting tagged back in. Rick works on the arm and nearly falls out of the ring trying to do it. Scott gets tagged in and hits a Pumphandle slam and a bodyslam. Scott hits some crazy stalling suplex sit out tombstone which gets a huge pop. Bulldog from the top finishes things at 4:04. * for the finish.
Winners: Steiner Brothers

Mr. Hughes Vs Bert Centeno (3:00)
Bert runs into a right hand and a tossing body slam to start things off. It’s a bold strategy – let’s see how things play out. Bert ducks a clothesline but gets thrown anyways. Harvey Wippleman is out with the flu, for those wondering. Hughes hits a nasty looking powerbomb, but refuses to take the three. Hughes hits a headbutt and smashes Centeno’s head in the ground. Hughes works the…ears? Bossman slam ends things at 2:59. DUD. Hughes spent half the match standing there looking stupid. On the plus side, the glasses stayed on.
Winner: Mr. Hughes

Hacksaw Jim Duggan Vs Mark Thomas
Mark Thomas looks more like a wrestler than Duggan does, but Duggan is wearing red, white, and blue on Memorial Day. Thomas attacks from behind but gets caught in a body slam to the buckle and then to the ground. Duggan starts a USA chant and punches Thomas in the name of Yokozuna. Back body drop and a suplex lead to…another USA chant. Duggan ends things with a clothesline at 2:20, which is about two minutes and twenty seconds longer than I wanted it to be. DUD.
Winner: Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Duggan wants the United States flag in the ring, and leads the crowd into the Pledge of the Allegiance. Randy Savage has an orgasm over this.

Vince goes over the Ramon-123 Kid storyline. Kid beat him, Ramon offered $2,500 and $5,000 to face him again. 123 Kid cuts a promo and looks so scared. He says he can’t believe the offers he’s making, but he still can’t accept it knowing what could happen to him. What a pussy.

Razor Ramon Vs Tony Roy
Savage starts a “1-2-3” chant during Ramon’s entrance, which continues past the opening bell. Roy goes for a roll up for two but gets taken out with a stiff clothesline. Ramon chops away in the corner and catches Roy in a fallaway slam. Tony takes a good twenty of thirty slaps to the head as Savage continues the chant with the crowd. Roy tries another school boy thanks to the distraction but all he gets is kicked in the gut and an elbow to the jaw. Probably not his best decision. The fans chant that they want the 123 Kid, which causes Ramon to put Roy down for a second. A devastating backdrop off the rope and the Razor’s Edge ends the match at 3:20. * for the crowd interaction.
Winner: Razor Ramon

Yokozuna makes his way out with Mr. Fuji to talk to Vince McMahon. Fuji asks what Memorial Day is, which Vince explains. “Come June 13, we will celebrate Memorial Day!” Vince tells him today is Memorial Day, while June 13 is when Yoko will face Hogan at King of the Ring. Yokozuna promises that “Hulkamania will die! BANZAI!” See, it rhymes, so you know it’s true. Yoko will be on the King’s Court and Vince speculates Hogan might show up. Fuji has short memory and doesn’t remember the past, so Hogan’s win at Wrestlemania doesn’t count. Duggan is shown in the crowd, waving around the flag and chanting USA to end the show. Duggan looks like he smells awful all of the time.

The 411: Pretty boring show outside of the opening match. They’re doing a good job of getting the crowd behind 123 Kid, even without him being there. I felt like this show was more about Jim Duggan than anything else, and whether or not that’s true, it really made me not enjoy myself. Hopefully next week will be better, which features one of the Smoking Gunns and one of the Steiners taking on one of the Headshrinkers and one of the members of Money Inc.
